Handlungs­raum 23_ZONE

„Svea Duwe has marked the rooms of the gallery as a zone by sticking the word in diffe­rent letter sizes on the shop windows of this exhibi­tion and meeting place. Where Zone is displayed, does it also contain Zone? Or are we made aware of what is outside when we look out of the window through the curtain of letters: namely the so-called East Zone? Duwe is well aware of the negative conno­ta­tion still attached to the term, at least for former GDR citizens. After all, a zone is not a country, but an area with special charac­te­ristics. In this respect, the term refers to German-German history with its complex ambiva­lence, its diffe­rent perspec­ti­ves and the resul­ting construc­tions. What some might read as a provo­ca­tion would not do justice to the comple­xity of the work. At the latest when thinking about the location, the provo­ca­tive loses its sharp­ness. Isn’t an art space also an area with special charac­te­ristics; an area in which things are reinter­pre­ted and other perspec­ti­ves or points of view on the world are develo­ped and shown? Absolutely!

„Svea Duwe hat die Räume der Galerie als Zone markiert, indem sie die Schau­fens­ter dieses Ausstel­lungs- und Begeg­nungs­or­tes mit dem Wort in verschie­de­nen Buchsta­ben­grö­ßen beklebt hat. Wo Zone drauf­steht ist auch Zone drin? Oder werden wir beim Blick aus dem Fenster durch die Buchsta­ben­gar­dine darauf aufmerk­sam gemacht, was sich draußen befin­det: nämlich die sogenannte Ostzone. Duwe ist sich der negati­ven Konno­ta­tion, die dem Begriff, zumin­dest für die ehema­li­gen DDR Bürger, noch anhaf­tet, wohl bewusst. Denn eine Zone ist kein Land, sondern ein Gebiet mit beson­de­ren Merkma­len. Insofern verweist der Begriff auf die deutsch-deutsche Geschichte mit ihrer komple­xen Ambiva­lenz, ihren unter­schied­li­chen Perspek­ti­ven und den daraus resul­tie­ren­den Konstruk­tio­nen. Was für einige als Provo­ka­tion lesbar ist, würde der Vielschich­tig­keit der Arbeit nicht gerecht werden. Spätes­tens mit dem Nachden­ken über den Ort, verliert Provo­kan­tes an Schärfe. Ist nicht ein Kunst­raum auch ein Gebiet mit beson­de­ren Merkma­len; ein Areal, in dem Dinge umgedeu­tet und andere Perspek­ti­ven oder Blick­win­kel auf die Welt erarbei­tet und gezeigt werden? Allerdings!
