Who is afraid of Reality?

In sculp­ture, I am interes­ted in states of trans­for­ma­tion and incre­asingly in natural materials.

The human material hair someti­mes triggers strong emoti­ons in the viewer, ranging from fasci­na­tion to disgust to fear. There is something very irratio­nal about it. I explore this border­line area between fasci­na­tion and disgust.

In the connec­tion of hair with writing and words, the existen­tial and irratio­nal meets the ratio­nal, the mental. Therein lies an effort to order something futile, the loose and tangled, the matted.

On the one hand it is about reality and the fear of reality and it is about winning, about compe­ti­tion. On the other hand, it is about the person Reality Winner, a young Ameri­can whist­le­b­lower who was the first to leak evidence of Russian inter­fe­rence in the 2016 Ameri­can election and was senten­ced to over 5 years in prison for it. Amazin­gly, her fate has gone almost unnoti­ced by the public. At a time when it feels like every­thing is being talked about and trashed on social media from all sides, this story of a person of remar­kable integrity is comple­tely left out.

TRUST

The example of the term TRUST shows the disso­lu­tion of a moral context of meaning, because the English term for trust is used today mainly in connec­tion with stock transac­tions. Thus, the term TRUST, which has solidi­fied into a symbol out of hair and skin glue, appears here as a shadow on the wall like a dollar sign.
For me, it’s about inter­per­so­nal trust and what money does to us.
It’s about the longing for struc­ture and relia­bi­lity and being trapped in them and it’s about liquids, slime and felt.
It’s about this strange dream of gold and the tragic ridicu­lous­ness of it all.

The star is the most commonly used symbol on natio­nal flags and often repres­ents geogra­phi­cal areas.
It is a very simple geome­tric figure. And as a symbol it is widespread and universal.
At the same time, it also conta­ins the human figure, as in the Vitru­vian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci.

It fasci­na­tes me to use these very simple black forms to suggest an intimate situa­tion in a model-like way.

This model tells a lot about bodily bounda­ries and closen­ess, perhaps also about the futility of it.

Who is afraid of Reality?

Plastisch inter­es­sie­ren mich Wandlungs­zu­stände und zuneh­mend mehr Naturmaterialien.

Das mensch­li­che Material Haar löst mitun­ter starke Emotio­nen beim Betrach­ter aus, das reicht von Faszi­na­tion über Ekel bis hin zu Ängsten. Darin steckt etwas sehr Irratio­na­les. Damit arbeite ich und lote diesen Grenz­be­reich zwischen Faszi­na­tion und Abscheu aus.

In der Verbin­dung von Haar mit Schrift und Worten trifft das Existen­zi­elle und Irratio­nale auf das Ratio­nale, Gedank­li­che. Darin liegt ein Bemühen, etwas Vergeb­li­ches, das Lose und Wirre, das Verfilzte zu ordnen.

Zum einen geht es um die Wirklich­keit (Reality) und um die Angst vor der Wirklich­keit und es geht um das Gewin­nen, um Wettbe­werb. Zum anderen geht es um die Person Reality Winner, eine junge ameri­ka­ni­sche Whist­le­b­lo­we­rin, die als erste einen Beweis für die russi­sche Einmi­schung in die ameri­ka­ni­sche Wahl 2016 leakte und dafür zu über 5 Jahren Gefäng­nis verur­teilt wurde. Erstaun­li­cher­weise ist ihr Schick­sal von der Öffent­lich­keit nahezu unbemerkt. In einer Zeit, in der gefühlt alles von allen Seiten in den sozia­len Netzwer­ken thema­ti­siert und zerre­det wird, wird diese Geschichte einer bemer­kens­wert intege­ren Person komplett ausgespart.

TRUST

Am Beispiel des Begrif­fes TRUST zeigt sich die Auflö­sung eines morali­schen Bedeu­tungs­zu­sam­men­hangs, denn der engli­sche Begriff für Vertrauen wird heute haupt­säch­lich im Zusam­men­hang mit Aktien­ge­schäf­ten gebraucht. So bildet sich hier der aus Haaren und Hautleim zu einem Symbol erstarrte Begriff TRUST als Schat­ten an der Wand wie ein Dollar­zei­chen ab.
Es geht mir um zwischen­mensch­li­ches Vertrauen und um das was Geld mit uns macht.
Es geht um die Sehnsucht nach Struk­tur und Verläss­lich­keit und das Gefan­gen­sein in ihnen und es geht um Flüssig­kei­ten, Schleim und Filz.
Es geht um diesen seltsa­men Traum vom Gold und um die tragi­sche Lächer­lich­keit des Ganzen.

Der Stern ist das am häufigs­ten gebrauchte Symbol auf Natio­nal­flag­gen und steht oft für geogra­phi­sche Teilgebiete.
Er ist eine sehr einfa­che geome­tri­sche Figur. Und ist als Symbol weit verbrei­tet und universal.
Zugleich steckt in ihm auch die mensch­li­che Gestalt, wie ja auch im Vitru­via­ni­schen Mensch von Leonardo Da Vinci.

Es reizt mich, mit diesen sehr einfa­chen schwar­zen Formen, modell­haft eine intime Situa­tion anzudeuten.

Dieses Modell erzählt viel über Körper­gren­zen und Nähe, vielleicht auch über die Vergeb­lich­keit davon.
