So Now

This photo­mon­tage shows a compass rose, a stone and brass inlay in the floor of the entrance to the subway at Hamburg’s south main station. What was remar­kable for me was the propor­tio­nally too narrow surroun­ding space of the floor inlay and the direct alignment of almost all direc­tional peaks to walls. SO NOW – a picto­rial situa­tion of how perso­nal space of possi­bi­lity is deter­mi­ned by urban archi­tec­ture and social trans­port axes. Over a longer period of time I captu­red the movement of the passers-by and later mounted fragments of single images, which were super­im­po­sed on each other.
All white values of the motif are cut out in the printing process on brushed alumi­nium, so that the motif appears darker or brigh­ter depen­ding on the incidence of light and the angle of view.
With this compass rose I also shot the perfor­ma­tive video SO NOW, which is especi­ally interes­t­ing as an acoustic documen­ta­tion of this place.

Diese Fotomon­tage zeigt eine Windrose, die sich als Stein- und Messing­in­tar­sie im Boden des Zugangs zur U‑Bahn am Hambur­ger Haupt­bahn­hof Süd befin­det. Bemer­kens­wert war für mich der propor­tio­nal zu enge Umraum der Boden­in­tar­sie und die unmit­tel­bare Ausrich­tung nahezu aller Richtungs­spit­zen auf Wände. SO NOW – eine bildhafte Situa­tion dafür wie der persön­li­che Möglich­keits­raum durch Stadt­ar­chi­tek­tur und soziale Verkehrs­ach­sen bestimmt wird. Über einen länge­ren Zeitraum hielt ich hier die Bewegung der Passan­ten fest und montierte später überein­an­der­ge­legte Fragmente aus Einzelbildern.
Alle Weißwerte des Motivs sind im Druck­ver­fah­ren auf gebürs­te­tes Alumi­nium ausge­spart, sodaß das Motiv je nach Licht­ein­fall und Blick­win­kel dunkler oder strah­lend hell erscheint.
Mit dieser Windrose drehte ich auch das perfor­ma­tive Video SO NOW, das insbe­son­dere als akusti­sche Dokumen­ta­tion dieses Ortes inter­es­sant ist.
